Charlie’s Story

Charlie Herbert, a strong and spirited 12-year-old, currently lives in Seaford, NY, with deep roots in the Shoreham-Wading River community through his dad, an SWR graduate. In September 2025, Charlie was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma of the central nervous system, an extremely rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer.

After months of persistent neck pain that was initially believed to be sports-related, further testing revealed a tumor on Charlie’s spinal cord between C1 and C2. On September 12, 2025, he underwent a five-hour surgery to remove the tumor. Just days later, his family received the life-changing diagnosis. While Ewing’s Sarcoma is already rare, Charlie’s case is considered one of the rarest, with only a handful ever reported in this location.

Since then, Charlie has faced his diagnosis with incredible courage. He completed six weeks of radiation and has been undergoing an intensive chemotherapy regimen since October 2025, with treatment expected to conclude at the end of May. His journey has required long days, multiple medications, and immense strength – all of which he has met with resilience beyond his years.

Despite everything he is facing, Charlie continues to be a bright light. He loves sports, especially baseball and football, and enjoys building complex LEGO sets, drawing, riding his bike, and collecting sports trading cards. He also loves spending time with friends, visiting Montauk, and enjoying his favorite foods like tacos and fajitas.

Charlie is known for his incredible personality – witty, funny, and wise beyond his years. He connects easily with both kids and adults, balancing an “old soul” presence with a playful and lighthearted spirit. He is competitive, driven, and a true team player who expects the best from himself and those around him. Teachers and peers alike admire his kindness, leadership, and the way he lifts others up, often going out of his way to support those who may be struggling.

Through every challenge, Charlie has remained tough, positive, and full of determination. His strength and mindset have inspired an entire community to rally around him under the message: #CharlieStrong #ChallengeAccepted

Charlie, we are standing with you and your family every step of the way. Your courage, strength, and spirit inspire us all. We are here to lift you up, support you, and match your incredible fight with unwavering love.

Keep going, Charlie – you are truly something special.
